Your children are settled into their new school year and all of the fall sports are officially underway. You finally catch your breath just in time (GASP) for the holiday season! There’s something about the turning of the leaves and the brisk cool air that makes me start PANICKING about the holidays. My preparation begins by calling MOSS with my handyman 'honey-do' list. Secondly, I begin prepping my kitchen for the impending festivities with my top three “holiday must-haves.” Because as you know, THE IN-LAWS ARE COMING!
Decorate Your Northern VA Home
Let’s just be real…the winter months are LONG, DARK, and COLD. Specifically, during these darker cooler months, the kids and I tend to go a little crazy decorating the house. Psychologically it probably helps to keep the winter doldrums away. However, changing the color of an accent wall in the kitchen or adding some tea lights across your kitchen island can go a long way. Small fixes can alter the mood of your home and make it more festive for all those to enjoy. Strategically placing some holiday-themed décor (whether it be Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Hanukkah) around your kitchen can instantly put your guests in the mood for the upcoming celebration! Food, Food, and More Food
I think it goes without saying that NO kitchen is complete without food. Your kitchen is literally the heart of the home and in our culture, we show love through food and hospitality. The holidays intensify this sense of responsibility and Costco becomes my home away from home.
Baking Paraphernalia
I am not a baker. Anyone that knows me well can attest to that. However, around Halloween time I suddenly get the urge to become Martha Stewart and start scrounging around on Pinterest. I start breaking out the odd shaped cookie cutters, dust off my Kitchen-aid mixer, and purchase obnoxiously-themed aprons. Come on, nothing SCREAMS Halloween like cutesy spider cookies or Thanksgiving like your Grandma’s pumpkin pie. Chances are if you haven’t baked during this year, you WILL attempt to whip something up around the holidays.
No matter what holidays you celebrate or how you choose to celebrate them, the most important piece are the people you choose to spend them with. So, take a moment to hug them a little tighter and take the time to be simply-present.
